Team hasn’t been defeated since mid-November
By STEPHEN SWEET – Special to the Examiner

A lot has happened in the sporting world since Nov. 19.

Two Barrie Colts were selected to Canada’s national junior team.

The B.C. Lions won the Grey Cup on home turf.

And the NBA ended its lockout and began an abbreviated season.

One thing, though, still hasn’t occurred.

A regular-season defeat for the Barrie Colts minor midget ‘AAA’ squad.

“Our last loss was on our road trip out to Kingston, when we lost to (Quinte),” said Colts head coach Steven Farquharson. “Since then, we haven’t lost a regular-season game.”

In their past 16 contests, the Colts have drawn six and won 10, including a key 5-1 victory over Ajax/Pickering Raiders on Wednesday night.

“I think we played hard, got pucks deep and kept taking the man,” said Barrie defenceman Ryan Marks. “We went hard the whole game.”

He was the one who opened the scoring in the second period, on a shot that deflected off of a Raiders player and in.

“We were all over them at the start, and I think (the goal) really opened the floodgates for us,” Marks said.

When they pulled ahead, goaltender Ian Andriano came up with some big stops, including a post-to-post move to rob the Raiders on a two-man power play.

“Our goaltending’s been real solid for us,” said Farquharson of the combination of Andriano and T.J. Sherwood. “Games like this, big games where we need it, they come up big for us.”

Drake Board had a pair of goals for Barrie, while Ben Skuce and Max Healy had the other markers in a big win over a close divisional rival.

“We’re fighting with these guys and the (York-Simcoe Express) to hold on to the top spot (in the division), and our guys played hard until the end of the third period,” Farquharson said.

Their run over the past two-and-a-half months hasn’t gone unnoticed, either, as the Colts are currently ranked ninth on the OHL Cup’s province-wide top-10 list.

“That’s a great feeling and it’s great to be known,” Board said. “We were an honourable mention for a bit, and then we tied a few games.

“I thought we’d be off of it (after that), but actually, we moved up to ninth.”

They’ve held their ground on the rankings list for three weeks now.

“Every week, when we see we’re on there, we announce it in practice, and the kids all tap their sticks,” Farquharson said.

But then, the real work kicks in.

“They all know that the hardest part is to stay on there,” Farquharson said. “There are so many other teams, even in our league, where we’re the only ones on it, so the boys know they have to work hard to stay on there.”

That means keeping their focus.

“We just take the games one at a time,” Board said. “We look at each game like we have to win that one to stay in first.”

That hasn’t required too much imaginative work, given that the Colts currently sit tied for the top spot with York Central, albeit with a game in hand.

“With three games left in the season, we have to keep grinding hard through the games and just keep finding a way to pull out a win,” Marks said.

Keeping that must-win mentality has helped the Colts push forward. “That’s one thing about our team right now,” Farquharson said. “We’re playing desperate hockey, even though we’re in first place.”

And they’re willing to do whatever it takes to stay there.

“We’re working hard, and we’re definitely working hard in practice,” Board said. “One practice we just bag-skated, and I don’t know, but I think that helped us in the long run.”

And success in this year’s OMHA playoffs could mean an additional tournament at the end.

“If we make it to the OHL Showcase Cup in the spring, that’d be perfect,” Board said. “We can all be showcased there and hopefully get scouted.”

Colts tie Preds

BARRIE – After recently cracking the OHL Cup Top Ten standings and coming in with a 13 game unbeaten streak, the Minor Midget Barrie Colts should have easily grabbed two points from the North Central Predators last Saturday. Should have, but didn’t.
The team tied 2-2.
Playing the role of the home team at the Innisfil Recreation Complex, the Colts had won their last five games and were locked in a three way tie for first overall in the league. Defeating a Predators squad that had lost three of their last four and were struggling to get into the upcoming playoffs, seemed like a matter of just showing up.
Coach Steve Farquharson was the first to admit that his team failed to do just that.
“We’re facing a team here tonight that is at least 20 points behind us and we don’t even show up, that’s unacceptable,” Farquharson said. “What this game did show is that a team may not be on our skill level, at least on paper, but they worked hard and obviously practiced hard, and came away with a point instead of none.”
The last time these two teams faced each other also saw the result of a tie game. After handily putting away several squads that are within a couple of points of his Colts, the frustrated coach thinks he knows why the close games with lesser teams are happening.
“Our guys seem to think that they can let off the gas when a team from the lower part of the standings is on the other side of the ice,” said Farquharson. “The problem is the lack of a point that we should have got tonight could mean the difference between first and third in the playoff seeding.”
A physical game from the opening face-off, the two teams shared heavy checks throughout the first period but saw little in the way of penalties.
With eight minutes left in the opening frame, the Colts took the lead on a goal by Brayden Laurin with assists by Dakota Hynes and Ryan Young. Superb stick-handling by Young and a great finish by Laurin gave the crowd the feeling like the Colts had woken up and were going to start the second period refreshed and ready to go.
Goalie Ian Adriano had made some brilliant saves throughout the first and most of the second periods. But traffic in front of him with five minutes left in the second helped North Central’s Marty Lawlor sneak one past the netminder.
“He kept us in this game and without Ian we may not have gotten out of here with a tie,” said Farquharson. “Our goalies are the only ones that show up day in and day out which is unfortunate because we give them a result like this.”
The second period had a few more penalties and noticeably more aggression. A couple of roughing penalties to both teams had started some bad blood that promised to carry on into the third.
Max Healy scored an early go-ahead goal for the Colts with helpers from Nick Chaykowsky and James Mense-Dietrich.
Proving that no lead is safe no matter how much time is left, the Predators pulled their goalie and Darren Nesbitt scored with 46 seconds left to tie the game and leave a dejected Colts netminder thinking about the last goal.
“I wish I could have that one back,” said Adriano. “It’s not the result we wanted but maybe this will show us that any team can win on any night. We have to be ready to play all the time.”
Those sentiments were shared by defenseman Chaykowsky who believes they’ll be ready for their next game.
“We have to practice harder because that carries over into the game,” he said. “We didn’t play that awful, but when a team is as hard working as North Central was tonight, we have to be ready.”
The Colts host the Clarington Toros on Jan. 29 at the Holly Community Centre at 7 p.m.

The Modern Sales Cooperative (MSC) Minor Midget AAA Colts had another busy weekend playing three games in three nights and taking six points.
Barrie played a home and home series with the Central Ontario Wolves from Lindsay. They were away on Saturday and played a wide open score fest, ending 6-5. James Mense-Dietrich lead the way with a 5 point night (2G, 3A) with Max Healy getting four points (2G. 2A). Ryan Hyndman opened the scoring and added an assist. Sean Anderson added 2 assists. Devon Gillham rounded out the scoring and Ben Skuce and Nick Chaykowsky added an assists.
The Wolves returned to Barrie on Sunday in a defensive battle. It was a scoreless tie at the end of two periods in a goaltender dual with rivals from Minor Pee Wee. Gillham and Hyndman solved the Wolves goaltending. Healy, Ryan Young and Ryan Marks added assists. Ian Andriano got the shutout for Barrie in a 2-0 decision.
The Colts traveled to Markham and completed the season sweep with a likely playoff opponent, the Markham Waxers. Trailing 1-0 Mense-Dietrich struck to tie the game late in the second frame. Marks got the game winner on a 5 on 3 power play giving Barrie a 2-1 victory. T.J. Sherwood played exceptionally well in net. Young, Marks and Drake Board got assists.
